paddle every day!

Wet as today

February23

No I havent fallen in. Its raining and yukky you might say this morning with not a lot of hope left for the rain to clear. You can still paddle in the rain though. High tide is midday and we have light northwest winds getting stronger as the day progresses.

Below is a pic from the Hyundai longboard pro event held at Manu Bay this year. The picture shows that thier is no sitting down in your heat while you wait for a set.

A day off ?

February22

Well maybe, it isnt the most enticing paddling day today ( spoilt ay). Its not cold but grey though. After the warm sunny weather its just not right. Smooth enough on the harbour though with a light northeast and high tide around 11.30 this morning.

The beach will have small wave as the tide drops and so will the wide open expanses. The Points are too small.

Paddling again today ?

February21

You betcha. We have calm conditions this morning with high tide at 10.30 this morning. Glass off mid morning then its seabreazes in the afternoon.

Small waves on the exposed coast this morning. Wind effected this afternoon as the seabreaze kicks in.

We had a great paddle yesterday in the morning and an even better one in the evening as the tide filled and the sunset.

Shayne Baxter

Shayne Baxter (Chch) squared the Tour up at two wins a piece with Daniel Kereopa (Rag) in the Stand Up Paddleboard Division. In a final that had a twist to the end of the heat, Baxter jumped from third to first preventing Karlos Aarsen (WGM) from claiming his maiden victory. Baxter looked the most aggressive throughout the final attacking the short sharp closeout sections with his typical aggression. Baxter finished with a score of 10.73 ahead of Aarsen on 10.47 points who caught the bigger longer rides from out the back but was unable to match the power of Baxter. Kereopa, winner of two of the four events this year, had to settle for third place with fellow Raglan surfer Armie Armstrong (Rag) in fourth.

Daniel Kereopa

Late on Saturday Jeremy Stephenson (Auck) claimed his first Stand Up Paddleboard race win over Armie Armstrong (Rag). The two surfers battled it out over three laps of the course through the waves but Stephenson managed to sneak onto a wave on the last lap and come to the shore ahead of Armstrong. Armstrong retains the red jersey as the top rated paddler while Stephenson sits in second ahead of Shayne Baxter (Chch) in third.

Fastest-Growing Segment of Surfing to be on Display at Inaugural Event in Peru

Written by ISA
Tuesday, 14 February 2012
StandUp Paddling (SUP) has spawned an industry within the surfing industry – and a level of excitement not seen since the introduction of Simon Anderson’s “thruster” fin set-up. The enthusiasm surrounding SUP, and its further implementation into the wave-riding tribe is part of why the ISA and its president, Fernando Aguerre, wanted to create the ISA World StandUp Paddle and Paddleboard Championship.

The SUP population is growing exponentially; people have come to realize that any body of water could suit the big boards and paddles. While the surfing side of SUPing continues to push the envelope on any preconceived performance limitations, the racing aspect of SUPs has also attracted a new group of people to board-riding. The two disciplines will be on display for the inaugural event beginning February 19, 2012 in the waters off Lima, Peru.

“SUP is a part of our sport that’s easy to learn, but difficult to master,” said Aguerre, who’s been riding SUPs for nearly four years. “Just like surfing, it has roots in the ancient history of our sport. It was a functional activity, used for fishing and physical activity, and then later you had the Waikiki Beach Boys using it to work with tourists while they learned to surf. Now, it’s becoming mainstream and further expanding the wave-riding and board-riding community. You have people riding SUPs all over the world, from Lake Tahoe to the Red Sea. I’m excited that the ISA is bringing the best that the SUP community has to offer to one place, in Peru.”

Following the resurgence of SUP less than a decade ago, by the likes of Hawaiians Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama, the discipline has been modernized, and the sport has evolved beyond riding waves to flat-water racing on oceans and lakes, and tackling river rapids.

“It’s a wonderful sport that you can do with or without waves, alone or with many people,” Aguerre said. “Pairing SUP with paddleboard racing seemed like a natural fit; both have ancient roots and have a place in our board-riding world.”

Over 140 athletes from 17 countries will make the trip to Peru to compete on SUPs and paddleboards. The event will stretch six days and include SUP surfing and racing, and paddleboard races, which will include sprint courses and marathon distances.

The event begins on Sunday, February 19 with the traditional ISA Opening Ceremony, the Parade of Nations and the Sands of the World Ceremony.

Aside from the ISA World StandUp Paddle (SUP) and Paddleboard Championship, the ISA will also host the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Panama in April, as well as the ISA World Surfing Games, the ISA World Bodyboard Championship, and the ISA World Masters Surfing Championship.

The event will be webcasted live on www.isawsuppc.com beginning February 19 until the final day, February 25.

Friday Late Afternoon ……

February17

There is potential for great late afternoon paddle  with high tide at 7.30 this evening. The seabreaze has come up but will ease just like last night and we will end up with clean calm conditions.

Kereopa versus Baxter

February17

The penultimate round of the Hyundai Tour is set for a start at Mount Maunganui this weekend .

The burgeoning field of stand up paddleboarders will have to sit bac and watch the two horse race between defending champion Daniel Kereopa (Rag) and Shayne Baxter (Chch). Baxter has played bridesmaid to Kereopa for the past two years. Out of three events in 2012 it is 2-1 to Kereopa with Baxter claiming the most prestigious event – the National Championships. A win this weekend by Baxter will set up an epic clash for the final event of the year.

Baxter is also part of a leading pack of paddlers in the King of the Waves Paddle Race where he is ranked third equal. Raglan paddler Armie Armstrong will go into this weekends event wearing the red jersey as the ratings leader with Jeremy Stephenson (Auck) in white as runner up.
